1 in 5 UK adults said images on social media had caused them to worry about their body image.

Anxiety and depression can cause an inflammatory response which weakens the skin's barrier function. Skin can also lose moisture and heal more slowly.

Among teenagers, 37% felt upset, and 31% felt ashamed in relation to their body image.

Just over one third of adults said they had ever felt anxious (34%) or depressed (35%) because of their body image.

Several mental health issues can occur alongside skin disorders including depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders, body dimorphic disorder and delusional disorders.

A study in 2014 showed that among patients who completed psychodermatology therapies, 94% reported reduced stress, 92% reported increased confidence and 90% reported that they understood their skin condition better.

A poll of 2000 women found that 6 in 10 blamed their lack of self-esteem on not meeting typical beauty standards. 1 in 5 put their insecurity down to celebrities on social media. 10% felt beauty brands have realistic representations of women and 63% said they would feel more confident in themselves if they saw women in adverts who reflected the way they look.

A survey with over 10,000 women revealed that 59% of people reported they now feel more confident in their skin due to weeks of refocusing their beauty routines at-home during lockdown.

Stress, anxiety and emotional distress can manifest themselves on the skin and can aggravate an existing condition.
